• Causes of transmission fluid degradation include overall thermal stress, mechanical shearing, and contamination.
• Mechanical shearing affects the fluid’s viscosity modifiers, causing the fluid to thin.
• Common sources of contamination include metals and other engine fluids.
• Coolant contamination is particularly harmful and usually requires a complete overhaul or even replacement of the transmission.
• Signs that transmission fluid should be replaced include: transmission grinding or making strange noises, problems shifting gears, gears slipping, vehicle lurching forward or falling back, delays in vehicle movement, and/or continued usage beyond the recommended fluid change timing.
